The James R. Crumley Jr. Archives...
- Began in 1991 as the Cooperative Center for Archives of Region 9, with the Southeastern Synod, Florida Synod, Lutheran Seminary and Region 9 as the original partners. Previously, the Southeastern Synod had a long-standing agreement with the Seminary Library to take care of its archives. The 1988 ELCA founding constitution called for the establishment of regional archives and the maintenance of congregation archives in each church.
- Recruited its first volunteer worker in 1991. Now has a part-time archivist (Jeanette Bergeron), two student assistants and numerous volunteer workers from community area churches and the USC Masters Degree archive program.
- Is named for former LCA Bishop the Rev. Dr. James R. Crumley Jr.
- Handled 646 research requests in the last eight months (as of fall 2005).
- Began with zero funding and is dependent on Lutheran friends, institutions and grant sources for support.
- Is governed by a Board of Trustees with representatives from the six Southern/Caribbean synods, Region 9, Lutheridge+Lutherock Ministries and Southern Seminary.
- Assists congregations and other Lutheran ministries with archival guidance and training such as the Congregation Heritage Conference, three days of training in keeping archives, celebrating anniversaries and writing histories.
